Reel Headlines
Local mediamakers make headlines and other news of note...
Google has moved its video search
engine out of
Beta status. What hidden treasures will you find
when you plug in the words Philadelphia film
or Philadelphia
video? (Some of our favorites? Elmo Rocks,
Philadelphia Street Racing, and Tom Juliano's
7-minute you-are-there bike riding video, Midnight
in Philadelphia....). Watch, comment, upload and
share.
Twentieth Century Fox will soon
begin using its Direct2Drive service to sell films like
X-Men: The Last Stand, and TV shows like
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
"You have my word, we're filming this one in
Philadelphia," says Leo Rossi of the
movie he
hopes to produce about the 1985 Villanova NCAA
basketball champs. Rossi, a Northeast Philadelphia
native and actor/producer of the forthcoming
10th & Wolf, is still taking it on the chin for
filming that South Philly-based flick in...Pittsburgh.
New Hope, PA resident and first-time filmmaker
Stephen Stahl, 57, talks about the Consequences of shooting his $2
million award-winning film in Philadelphia -- and why
he's nothing without his crew.
The New York Times' S. T. VanAirsdale
explores why some filmmakers prefer
the authenticity of a talented novice to the
professional polish of a trained actor.

graduate thesis students and to independent
filmmakers for a scheduled period of time.
The Playboy Foundation --
yes, that
Playboy --
funds social-change documentary film and video
projects that have nationwide impact and
scope. Its $1000 to $5000 film and video grants are
limited to projects in post-production, and are
not awarded directly to indidividual
filmmakers, but to the film or videomaker's fiscal
sponsor. The Playboy Foundation accepts funding
proposals on a rolling basis throughout the year, so
there are no pesky deadlines to worry about.

Film Festivals/Call for Entries
The first annual Black Lily: A
Women in Film Festival is a new direction for the
Black Lily brand, primarily known for music. Inspired
by the recognition of the parallels between the music
and film industries, both male dominated fields, in
which women are still striving for the
acknowledgement and recognition often taken for
granted by their male counterparts, the Painted Bride
Arts Center partnered with Black Lily.
This international festival seeks to highlight
groundbreaking women directors, writers, designers,
editors, and producers in film as well highlight works
by men that illuminate the role women play in
society. The Lily will take place May 4-6 at the
Painted Bride Arts Center in Old City.
Submission Deadline: December 1, 2006
Dance on Camera Festival announces
its call for entries. They're seeking strong synergies
of dance and film, whether it be a dance made for
the camera, documentary, adaptation of a stage
work or site specific creation. They also welcome
animation, narratives, and works in which the kinetic
energy and rhythmic design comes solely from the
editor or lighting designer. Dance films can be driven
from the prime perspective of dance, cinema, visual
arts, or in the case of documentaries, information.
Early deadline: September 15, 2006
Late deadline: September 25, 2006
The
International Film Festival Summit is dedicated
to providing resources, information and avenues of
communication for industry professionals, vendors, &
anyone committed to the Film Festival Industry. It is
committed to the idea that Film Festivals are an
important cultural celebration, a powerful voice in our
society, and increasingly play a vital role in
connecting not only the local communities they
serve, but the world globally. And this year it's in
Vegas, baby, Vegas!
Festival dates: December 3-5, 2006
