Welcome new member Jane Weiss! She's a voiceover actor who has joined PIFVA in hopes of meeting film and videomakers who can use her vocal work in their projects.

PIFVA Spring Cash Subsidy 2006 applicants have been notified, and winners will be announced in next week's E-Bulletin. Stay tuned!

PIFVA's Open Screen is back on Friday, November 3rd, with The Shape of Identity, a night of films by Philadelphia-based filmmakers including PIFVA board member Lynn Denton (Scumbling), Vanessa Briceno (Fading Away), Elizabeth Doyle and Deborah Rudman (Hard Hearted One), and Jen Schneider ( Something Rubber, Something Glue). A Q&A with the directors will follow the screening. Mark your calendars (or ours), and remember -- PIFVA members get in free.

Girl Pirates on the High Seas

Is the Independence Seaport Museum's Arrgh! Pirate Movie Series as fun to watch as it is to say? Find out on August 23rd when Burt Lancaster swashes and buckles in The Crimson Pirate.

On August 29th, tune into Waging A Living, the P.O.V. sponsored film that chronicles the day-to-day battles of four low-wage earners fighting to lift their families out of poverty.

On September 1st, the Philly Fringe/Live Arts Festival serves up Myth-Information: Movement Film Forum One, featuring nine artists and seven films that promise to use "choreography as a weapon." Hmmm....

Worried about finding money for your film? On the morning of September 28th, the Greater Philadelphia Filmmakers seminar Film Financing will examine private/ public funding and government incentives -- and offer you a spot of breakfast to boot.

Workshops, Fellowships & Grants
Chasing Funding

The Independence Foundation has announced year eight of its Fellowships in the Arts. Grants of up to $10,00 will be awarded to individual local artists for professional artistic development. Deadline for visual artist applicants is the somewhat vague Spring 2007. But that's plenty of time to visit their Web site for further information on the fellowship's eligibility requirements and to download an application.



Save the date for this upcoming funding deadline, too: February 2007 is the deadline for Creative Capital Foundation Grants for Visual Arts and Film/Video. Sign up for their e-mail list now to be kept abreast of the application deadline and other Creative Capital Foundation activities.



Can't make it to in person screenwriting and TV writing classes this fall? Mediabistro, the longrunning career and community Web site for media professionals, is offering convenient online eClasses (12-Week Screenwriter and 12-Week TV Writer) to help you finally finish those spec scripts.

Jay Terrell, owner and director of LA Bound Entertainment, a Philadelphia based casting service, teaches this eight week workshop about how to break into film, tv and commercial acting. Students will also have a "Business of the Business" session at the end of the workshop taught by one of Philadelphia's top managers.

The Main Line Times' Bruce Adams tries to make a movie star out of a mole hill with coincidentally named Narberth local Michael J. Fox, who served as an equipment manager and featured extra in the upcoming flicks We Are Marshall and Invincible.

Philadelphia- based filmmaker Lance Weiler (The Last Broadcast) has put together a 15-city theatrical- run of his latest film, Head Trauma, before it's released as a DVD on September 26th. Wired Magazine called him "One of twenty-five people helping to re- invent entertainment and change the face of Hollywood." And while we think the list numbers far more than 25, we agree that DIY indie filmmaker Weiler should be on it.

Alexandra Delyle and Liz Cole of Filmmaker Magazine tackle the blessings and curses of marketing your film with MySpace -- and how to make the most of the social networking site if you decide to include it in your film marketing efforts.

The Boston Globe thinks home editing software, MTV and movies like Miami Vice are just the latest evidence of the lost art of film editing.

Calls for Work + Contests

Iklipz has launched a monthly Best Film contest where members can upload their films and put them in the running to win a Sony High Definition Camcorder. Second and third place winners will win a Sony Mini DV Camcorder and a Sony Cybershot Digital Camera, respectively.



Landmark Theatres, which has staked out a unique and slightly controversial niche as the country’s largest theater chain devoted to independent film, has launched its own monthly contest, the Little Big Films Short Film Competition. Animation, Documentary, Music, and Live Action Fiction shorts on CD or DVD are welcome as long as they don't exceed 10 minutes in length.

One monthly winner from each category will receive a $1,000 cash prize. The four category winners will be eligible for the Grand Prize: $5,000 in cash and a Panasonic HD Camcorder.

Free Screening This Film Is Not Yet Rated!

The Promotions Group is offering PIFVA members and newsletter recipients tickets to the August 29th free screening of This Film Is Not Yet Rated, a controversial documentary from Academy Award-nominated director Kirby Dick and producer Eddie Schmidt that takes on the MPAA film ratings system and its profound effect on American culture. Director Kirby Dick will be in town for the screening and a sure-to- be lively post-film Q&A.

The air-conditioned bus tours will run for 3 hours on Sundays throughout the year and also be available throughout the week for private bookings. Tapestry International, a busy production company located in Sea Bright, NJ seeks organized and detail oriented production assistants with an interest in writing and post production work.



The University of the Arts is looking to fill a full- time calendar year position of Technology Manager for its College of Media and Communication (CMAC). Requirements include significant experience with video/audio equipment and programming/web design/server management; previous administrative or supervisory experience; experience working in college/university; and proficiency in Computer Science or web development or digital video and/or audio production and post- production. Review of applications will start immediately and continue until suitable candidate is found - so don't dawdle!

Upcoming Deadlines

Applications to the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival's Tribeca All Acess Connects program will be accepted beginning in late September 2006.

Tribeca All Access (TAA) Connects brings underrepresented filmmakers and writers together with film funders during the Tribeca Film Festival. Filmmakers and writers who identify as African American, Asian American, Latino/a, Pacific Islander or Native American are welcome to submit scripts and documentary proposals for consideration. Juried cash awards totalling approximately $25,000 are also presented to three filmmakers at the conclusion of the program.

Other quickly approaching deadlines include: Third Screen Film Festival (September 30th), Miami International Film Festival (October 2006), Pure Digital Video/Film Festival (October 31st), Chicago International Documentary Festival (December 30th), and Black Lily: A Women in Film Festival (December 1st).
