This special Scribe
Video Center workshop is
designed for both actors with stage training, who
wish to develop the skills of acting for the camera,
and for film/video directors, who are new to the
process of collaborating with actors. Through a
variety of exercises, screenings, critique and
discussion, participants will explore the process of
creating characters for the camera. This workshop
will also address how directors can best communicate
their vision of a character to allow actors to do their
best work. Space is limited and advance registration
is required.

Pittsburgh
Film office critics want to scrap it, start
over
The Pittsburgh-Post Gazette reports that
yesterday dozens of industry folks sent a letter
yesterday to the mayor, county executive and
governor asking for a "bold new approach to
nurturing film production in Western Pennsylvania,"
and delivered a resounding vote of no confidence to
the Pittsburgh Film Office. Ouch!

Production Grant Initiative
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Film
Office posts guidelines and a downloadable
application for productions intrigued by the 20
percent Film Production Grant for film production
expenses incurred in the Commonwealth.

spotlighted former PIFVA member
Justin Novelli-Stuempfle as cast and crew
finished production on the writer/director's debut
feature film The Eclipse. Filming took place in
Philadelphia, Manayunk, and Glen Mills, PA, through
July 15, 2006. Justin and his post-production team
will be diligently working on the film edit as well as
the score and final audio mix up through the end of
September in hopes of meeting the Sundance Film
Festival deadline.

Institute - an intensive production course in

Anxious to hear about the outcome of your PIFVA
Cash Grant Subsidy application? We haven't
forgotten about you! The Subsidy Panel will meet to
go over applications on August 1st, and all applicants
will be contacted directly within the following week.
And winners will be announced via the PIFVA Web
site and via the newsletter by mid-August. Stay

experience she had working on the production
and post-production of Will You, the short film
chosen as the winner of the Philadelphia
International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival's first
annual From Sheets to Screen screenplay
competition. Will You screened yesterday as
part of the festival's closing night activities, but you
can get the skinny on it

On August 7th, PIFVA member, board member
and independent filmmaker Anula Shetty will stop by
the Atwater
Kent Museum of Philadelphia's Summer Film
Series to
introduce two films about North Philadelphia's
American Street corridor - African Gardens
and Life Stories from American Street.

Job Opportunities
The University of the Arts seeks Film and
Animation instructors for the Fall 2006 semester and
beyond.
- The Media Arts Department at the
University of the Arts in downtown Philadelphia
is
hiring several part-time instructors to staff sections
of basic film production, sync sound film production,
soundtrack design, 3D computer animation, 2D digital
animation, and clay and puppet animation courses for
the 2006-07 academic year and beyond.
- The Introduction to Film and Digital Video
instructor should have knowledge of 16mm film
shooting and editing; lighting and exposure; and an
understanding of the history of film.
- The Sync Sound film production
instructor needs 16mm sync sound shooting and
editing experience, familiarity with DAT recording,
and narrative scriptwriting knowledge.
- The 3D Computer Animation instructor
requires modeling, lighting, texturing, and animation
skills using Maya.
- The 2D Computer Animation instructor
needs skills in compositing and vector based
animation using After Effects and Flash. Currently the
course is co-taught and we are only looking to fill the
Flash based half of the course but a suitable
candidate could teach the entire course the following
semester(s).
- The Sound Design and Technology for
animators course requires skills in soundtrack
design, recording and construction; digital editing;
and animation and storyboard knowledge. The course
may also have a green-screen shooting and
compositing component.
- The Clay and Puppet Animation course
requires knowledge of puppet construction and
fabrication; small set construction and lighting; and
character animation.

Temple University Seeks Video Adjuncts
Temple is looking to hire a pair of adjunct instructors
for a beginning audio-
visual class in Fall 2006. They would be working with
a full-time faculty member
as the lead. One instructor would work with the
students mostly on technical
production for three hours on Fridays, and the other
would work two hours on
technical production on Fridays and lead a student
work feedback group on
Wednesday morning.
The jobs would start the first of September and go
until the first week of December. Temple pays their
adjuncts a decent salary - at least $3,000 - and
Susan Jacobson, a Temple University Department of
Journalism professor, would give both adjuncts
significant support. The job requires someone with a
bachelor's degree and some audio-visual experience.
Teaching experience is preferred.

Creative Filmmaker Wanted!
Amaryllis Theatre Company/VSA arts of
Pennsylvania, a professional arts organization
dedicated to providing quality inclusive programming
to children and adults of Pennsylvania, is seeking an
experienced filmmaker to contribute to an eight week
project.
The eight week project, entitled Life Stories,
begins on Saturday, July 29th from 1:30-3:30 pm.
The project is the creation of original choral work (in
the tradition of Greek theatre/ chorus) through the
use of voice and movement. Six to eight wheelchair
users will write their own verse on the topics of
The Humor of It All and Movement.
Director, and voice and movement coach, Stephen
Patrick Smith will lead the participants in the creation
of a 30 minute performance piece. Pay is $1,000.
This position does not require that the filmmaker be
present for all 16 hours of development. The goal is
for the filmmaker to film some of the rehearsal period
which will include discussion, sidebar conversations,
movement and voice work, and parts of the final
performance piece for example, and then edit the
material to a viewing length of 3, 10 and 20 minute
segments. The final product should be in DVD/CD
form. We are interested in a filmmaker with highly
creative style- this project demands artistic flair and
unconventional style.

Aspire Productions Inc. is casting all types for a
feature film comedy entitled OUR SUMMER
MOVIE shooting in the Philadelphia area this August
and September. They are especially seeking college-
age actors, but also have many roles for those aged
30 to 70. Non-union only. Some pay for lead roles.
